Chengyan is a lighting, sound and projections designer and technical director for theatre, music and dance, having most often been found in the recent past at the Dance Centre and Pacific Theatre (Suitcase Stories, Valley Song, Gramma, Kim's Convenience, Wakey Wakey, The Mountaintop, The Messiah). He has also designed multiple times for Gateway Theatre (China Doll, Yoga Play), Mitch and Murray Productions (Smart People, Lungs, Snowflake, Instantaneous Blue), Theatre in the Raw (The Raymur Mothers, 12 Angry Jurors, Threepenny Opera, Incident at Vichy, Enter Laughing), Tomoe Arts (Weaver Woman, Journal of the Plague Year), Aenigma Theatre (Red, Viva, The How and the Why, Turn of the Screw), SACHA (A Vancouver Guldasta, Guards at the Taj) and Trinity Western SAMC (Jane Eyre: The Musical, Comedy of Errors).
He is interested in the anthropomorphizing and characterization of light in stories as well as the idea of creating satisfying impact with movement of light. He enjoys conversations about meaning and abstract symbolism in design elements. But most of all, he just wants to help tell stories. He feels lucky to have thus far been welcomed by a diverse theatrical community, transcending enclaves and diaspora to tell stories to one another and foster understanding and empathy in the world.
Chengyan is a graduate of the BFA Theatre Production and Design program at UBC.
